Will Haiti be Obama's Katrina?

Just hours after Tuesday's massive earthquake struck, images of the devastation were televised worldwide. The next day network TV news anchors were on the streets of Port-Au- Prince, where dead bodies, some beneath white sheets, could be seen strewn in the background.

"You will not be forsaken, you will not be forgotten," said Obama to Haitians from the White House on Thursday. He epitomized the virtue of helping the less fortunate, which has long been a part of the American ethic.

Obama is playing politics in the worst possible way at the worst possible time.

After all, if the United States can spend billions of dollars to wage war on foreign soil to fight ill-will, it must not become tight-fisted when it comes to goodwill. Remember, Haiti, located less than 800 miles from U.S. shores, is one of the most impoverished countries in the world.
But now we are hearing all about the screw-ups. Not much is getting to when it is needed and the looting is rampart.
And now Obama has called on George Bush to help out in Haiti. It was Obama's first presidential request of Bush, whom he criticized in the past for Bush's handling of the Hurricane Katrina.
